MIDLANDS GRAND NATIONAL DAY

Having run with great credit at two of the UK's biggest jumps meetings in the last 12 months - Grand National Day at Aintree and King George Chase Day at Kempton - Gorge again showed his fondness for big crowds when running a cracker at the Midlands Grand National meeting at a madhouse Uttoxeter racecourse.  Despite his recent win at Ludlow, Gorge was sent off rank outside at 22-1 in a 9 horse novice chase field that boasted a glut of good form.  Patiently guided by regular pilot Josh Hamer, Gorge jumped soundly and worked his way into 4th and in contention as the race hotted up with a mile to go.  As most of the field struggled to lay up when the steam was turned right up, Gorge fought on doggedly, never giving an inch over the final flights but neither quite able to run down the leading pair, ultimately not knocked around in finishing a close 3rd.

In assessing the run, Anthony observed "Up until 10.00 oclock Tuesday morning we were preparing Gorge for the 4 mile Novice Chase at the Festival.  Having missed the cut there, we then had just 3 days to freshen Gorge up to go a mile less here.  Obviously he has put in a great run in hot company, but it is understandable that he's run just a fraction dour when trying to close down the leaders over the final few flights.  If we have to be a one-horse stable it's nice to have one that tries as hard as Gorge".
